Map Layer Import: Legends and Global Controls

This window appears after you select the map layer file to import, enter the parameters, and press Next. You select or create a legend and, optionally, define Global Controls. The Global Controls vary according to the selected legend and analysis field. You cannot modify the global controls parameters for predefined AIR legends.

Common buttons

Use these buttons (when available) and the parameters below to define legends and manage the global controls.

Existing Legend

Enables you to select an existing legend—provided by AIR or created by users—to apply to the data set in the file that you are importing. To use an existing legend, the data values in the column specified for the Analysis Field or the Legend Field must match the categories or numeric ranges that exist in the selected existing legend. Example The legend you select must "work" for the data to which you are applying it: the two sets of data must intersect.

When using an existing legend, the legend you select determines the legend type.

Create new legend

Enables you to create a new legend. Click (Create new legend) and then enter a name for the new legend in the Legend Name field.

Duplicate legend

Enables you to copy an existing legend. Select an existing legend and then click . Modify the parameters to suit your requirements.

Legend Name

The name of the selected legend.

Analysis Field or Legend Field

Select the field that contains the categorical data that you want to map.

When the legend type is "Single Symbol," the name of the field is "Analysis Field".

When the legend type is "Banded Ranges" or "Discrete Values", the name of the field is "Legend Field."

The legend type.

Global Controls: Fill

Enables you to specify the fill opacity, which is useful for displaying layers with other layers. Adding transparency to the top layers enables users to view them while still viewing underlying layers. Fill values are based on values in percent.

Global Controls: Palette

Enables you to assign different colors to associate with each unique value by selecting from the palette. The Palette option appears only for Discrete Values and Banded Ranges. The palette offers four settings: Warm, Cool, Ice, and Monochrome.

Global Controls: Border, Border Thickness

Enables you to define a border, which is useful for displaying background images on the map.

Global Controls: Legend Settings

Enables you to define units, banding options, and number of bands for Banded Ranges.
