Map Tools

This topic is for Touchstone 5.0 and earlier. Maps in Geospatial Analysis 5.1 and Later contains information about Map Tools in version 5.1.

The Map Tools area on the Mapping ribbon enables you to view and manipulate map layer properties and the map legend, and to filter the exposure map by perils and geocodes.

Map Layer Properties

Clicking the Map Layer Properties icon opens the Map Layers window in the upper right corner of the map window. By default, the Show Details option and all the layers are selected. Remove the check mark for each layer that you do not want to view. You can change various properties by selecting the layer and then configuring the properties.

Usage example: In an exposure map, in the Base Maps area, select Streets and then click Map Layer Properties. In the Map Layers window, select the check boxes for the Streets and Clustered Points layers. Then select the Clustered Points layer and change the opacity by entering a percentage or by moving the slider. As you move the slider to the left, the cluster becomes more translucent, enabling you to see details behind the clusters. Zoom in on one of the clustered points areas until you see the streets.

To clear a layer, remove the check mark next to the layer name. When you select a portfolio thematic summary layer, you can view results by total replacement value or locations; the map legend data changes to reflect the field option that you select.

Map Legend

Clicking the Map Legend icon displays the Map Legend in the lower right corner of the map; the contents of the legend vary according to the map and to the map layer properties. To view the map legend, click the maximize icon to the left of "Map Legend".

You can change the border color, fill color, and border thickness of an item by clicking the item, such as the Clusters legend, and then editing it in the Symbology Editor.

Map Filters

Clicking the Map Filters icon opens the Map Filters window. This command applies only to the Exposure Summary map, and is available only in Portfolio mode, and only when there is an Exposure Summary for the exposure view. (Analyses still run on the entire exposure set, regardless of the filtered view on the map.).

You can select any combination of location perils and geocode match levels to filter the locations on the exposure map. For example, assume that your exposure data includes locations on the West Coast coded for the Earthquake peril and locations in Florida coded for the Tropical Cyclone perils. To display only those locations coded for the Tropical Cyclone perils, click Map Filters, select the Tropical Cyclone check box, and then click Apply; new clusters are generated based on your filter criteria. Now assume that you want to display only locations coded for the Tropical Cyclone perils and you want to see only those locations for which there is a City Centroid match. With the Tropical Cyclone peril still selected, select City Centroid in the Geocode Match Level area and click Apply. The filter criteria affect the thematic map, the heat map, and any associated legends. To clear the filters, click Clear Map Filters in the Map Tools area.
