Drawing and Selection Tools

This topic is for Touchstone 5.0 and earlier. Maps in Geospatial Analysis 5.1 and Later contains information about Map Tools in version 5.1.

The Drawing and Selection Tools area on the Mapping Ribbon enables you to draw polygons and ellipses, save them, and run a Geospatial Analysis using  those saved shapes. These tools are available for use on the Exposure Summary Dashboard map when you license Geospatial Analysis.

After saving shapes, you can use them in a Geospatial Analysis via the Accumulate Values by > Custom Boundaries option. When you open the analysis result, the shapes appear on the map.

To create and save polygons or ellipses on the Exposure Map:

1.     Open the Exposure Summary Dashboard for an exposure view.

2.     On the Mapping ribbon, in the Drawing and Selection Tools area, click the shape you want to use and then follow the appropriate steps for that shape. After you finalize a shape, the drawing mode resets to the Pointer.

To define a polygon, click the Polygon icon and then click on the map. Click again for each point that will define the polygon; the shape outline will be black. Double-click to finalize the shape; the shape outline turns to teal. (Double-clicking only finalizes the shape after you have selected the third point.)

To define an ellipse, click the Ellipse icon and then click on the map to choose the centroid of the circle. Move the cursor to draw the shape; Touchstone displays the radius of the shape as you move the pointer. The shape outline will be black. Double-click to finalize the shape; the shape outline turns to teal. (Double-clicking only finalizes the shape after you have selected the third point.)

3.     To delete shapes, click Delete Shapes and then click All or Selected.

4.     To save shapes as a custom boundary, click Save as Boundary and then click All or Selected. In the Import User Drawn Shapes dialog box, specify the layer name, legend information, legend name, and the Global Controls. For information about specifying legend information and Global Controls, refer to Map Layer Import: Legends and Global Controls. Click Save.

Notes

To cancel the shape drawing before finalizing it, press Esc.

To select a shape, click it. To deselect a shape, click it again. You can select multiple shapes.

When you save shapes, Touchstone creates a user-drawn Shape Import and adds an activity to the Activity Monitor.
