Server Definition

Administration Console > Server Administration > Server Definition

Server Definition enables System Administrators to register one or more instances of Microsoft SQL Server databases in the application.

Note:

Only System Administrators are authorized to add or remove SQL Server instances.

System Administrators and Business Unit Administrators can specify the default path for MDF and LDF files for all newly created exposure and results databases. The application uses the default path when users add a new, or modify an existing, SQL instance, or when they create a new exposure database while using AIR's Import tool. If a default path is not specified, the system uses the SQL Server default. Users can override the default path.

Parameters and Buttons

Click to register an SQL Server instance. The application attempts to connect to the new SQL Server instance and validate all the database versions

Click to soft-delete a SQL Server instance. The server instance is no longer available in the application user interface. Deleting a SQL Server instance also removes it from the business units with which it is associated.

You cannot undo a deletion. "Soft-delete" means that the instance is flagged for later deletion via a job run by a System Administrator.

Usage notes

  • There must always be at least one SQL Server instance registered in the application.

  • The default SQL Server database is the server to which you are currently connected.

  • The application uses the default MDF and LDF paths when administrative users add a new, or modify an existing, SQL instance, or when they create a new exposure database while using AIR ImportExpress. The application also uses the default paths when users create a new results database when running an analysis or add a new database through Data Source Management. If a default path is not specified, the system uses the SQL Server default. Users can override the default paths.

  • To schedule a purge on a specified date and time or to schedule purges to recur either daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, use Microsoft SQL Server Manager. You cannot schedule a purge through the Touchstone user interface. For more information about purging objects from a SQL Server, see SQL Server and Database Tuning available on the AIR Client Portal.

  • Only one purge job can run at a time. If you press the Purge icon again while a purge job is running, an error message will appear.

  • To check the status of a purge job, use Microsoft SQL Server Manager.
