Verisk Earthquake Model for Mexico

Enhancements to the Verisk Earthquake Model for Mexico

Scope

Major update that includes additional perils, new data, additional events, and new modeling processes.

General model updates

Peril(s)

New perils added. In addition to ground shaking, the updated model explicitly models the following perils:

  • Landslide
  • Liquefaction
  • Tsunami (Touchstone only)
Hazard
  • 15+ years of additional historical data
  • Updated fault database
  • Updated geodetic data
  • Added USGS SLAB2 geometries for subduction zones
  • Renewed the time-dependent model for subduction zone earthquakes
  • Incorporated the latest local, regional, and global ground motion prediction equations
  • Included path corrections for short- and long-period seismicity
  • Included the site-period-based amplification model for Mexico City (soft soil environment)
  • Expanded high-resolution soil data coverage
Vulnerability
  • Integrated the latest advancements in recent earthquake models for all sub-perils
  • Introduced intensity-based methodology for damage estimation
  • Added support for landslide, liquefaction, and (in Touchstone) tsunami sub-perils
  • Incorporated a new, peer-reviewed, municipality-based building codes study
  • Enhanced damage functions, including unknown damage functions for buildings with unknown attributes
Catalogs and event sets
  • Stochastic catalog(s)
    • Updated 10,000-year time-dependent catalog
    • New 100,000-year time-dependent catalog (Touchstone only)
    • All event IDs are new.
  • Historical event set
    • 28 new events
  • ILF new for earthquake

Touchstone-specific updates

    • Landslide
    • Liquefaction
    • Tsunami ( Touchstone only)
  • New 100,000-year time-dependent catalog, in addition to the updated 10,000-year time-dependent catalog
  • New support for specialized risk types
    • Builder's risk
    • Infrastructure
    • Large industrial facilities
    • Marine
  • Support for additional construction and occupancy codes
    • Construction: Updated to 142 classes total (including 44 infrastructure and 20 marine asset classes)
    • Occupancy: Updated to 126 classes total (including 12 large industrial facilities and 12 marine storage classes)
  • Supported geographic resolutions updated to include state
  • Boundaries and disaggregation. Note: Disaggregation updates will impact results for Mexico tropical cyclone.
  • Geospatial layers—Twenty-five layers for Verisk Earthquake Model for Mexico including peak ground, acceleration shake, spectral acceleration shake, liquefaction, tsunami, landslide, soil type, and fault lines.
  • Location-Level Event Intensities (LLEI) updates

Touchstone Re-specific updates

  • Updated Industry Exposure Database
    • Vintage updated to 2024
  • Support added for separate commercial and industrial lines of business in addition to the existing combined commercial and industrial line.
Note: Changes to the supported Mexico lines of business (LOBs) are for earthquake only. Mexico wind supported LOBs are unchanged. Refer to www.unicede.com for more details on supported Mexico LOBs and codes for UNICEDE/2 files.
  • Legacy exposure and loss sets will be upgraded during Touchstone Re upgrade or import to match the updated line of business scheme.
